CFTC and SEC declare shared harmonisation event on crypto leadership. On January 27, Chairman Selig and Chairman Atkins disclosed plans for regulatory clarity.

The Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced a historic joint event. On Tuesday, January 27, the agencies will discuss crypto regulatory harmonisation. The discussion will be led by CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig and SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins.

The official press release of the CFTC states that the event will take place between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET. It is held at CFTC headquarters in Washington, D.C. The event will be broadcast on the websites of the two agencies. In-person attendants should arrive at 9:30 a.m.

Ending Regulatory Chaos Once and For All

Both chairmen said that market participants have been compelled to manoeuvre regulatory boundaries that are not clear. They pointed out that the lack of alignment is rooted in historic jurisdictional silos. The incident is based on more extensive harmonisation work between the two agencies.

The chairmen promised to make sure that innovation is taking place on American soil and according to American laws. They desire it to be of use to American investors, consumers and economic leadership. This goes directly in line with the promise of President Trump to transform America into the crypto capital.

What’s Actually Happening Behind Closed Doors

The agenda has three key segments beginning at 10 a.m. Chairman Paul Atkins introduces a five-minute introduction. Mike Selig, in his role as chairman, is next with 15-minute opening remarks. The event is closed with a 30-minute fireside chat.

The fireside chat between the chairmen is moderated by Eleanor Terrett. Terrett is the co-founder and host of Crypto in America

The partnership with CFTC was advertised with the help of the SECGov account on X. The event is devoted to harmonisation and U.S. financial leadership, as SECGov tweeted on X.

The event involves registering in advance to attend physically. There is no registration required for online viewers. The gathering is held at CFTC headquarters in the conference centre, which is in Three Lafayette Centre. Its address is 1155 21st Street N.W., Washington, D.C.

Both agencies acknowledge that the existing regulatory framework is confusing. Agencies have overlapping jurisdiction over digital asset companies.

The harmonisation initiative aims to offer some clear guidelines. The unification of regulatory frameworks of crypto assets has been a long-standing demand among market participants.

Cashing In On University Patents Means Giving Up On Our Innovation Future

The post Cashing In On University Patents Means Giving Up On Our Innovation Future appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. “It’s a raid on American innovation that would deliver pennies to the Treasury while kneecapping the very engine of our economic and medical progress,” writes Pipes. Getty Images Washington is addicted to taxing success. Now, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is floating a plan to skim half the patent earnings from inventions developed at universities with federal funding. It’s being sold as a way to shore up programs like Social Security. In reality, it’s a raid on American innovation that would deliver pennies to the Treasury while kneecapping the very engine of our economic and medical progress. Yes, taxpayer dollars support early-stage research. But the real payoff comes later—in the jobs created, cures discovered, and industries launched when universities and private industry turn those discoveries into real products. By comparison, the sums at stake in patent licensing are trivial. Universities collectively earn only about $3.6 billion annually in patent income—less than the federal government spends on Social Security in a single day. Even confiscating half would barely register against a $6 trillion federal budget. And yet the damage from such a policy would be anything but trivial. The true return on taxpayer investment isn’t in licensing checks sent to Washington, but in the downstream economic activity that federally supported research unleashes. Thanks to the bipartisan Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, universities and private industry have powerful incentives to translate early-stage discoveries into real-world products. Before Bayh-Dole, the government hoarded patents from federally funded research, and fewer than 5% were ever licensed. Once universities could own and license their own inventions, innovation exploded. The result has been one of the best returns on investment in government history. Since 1996, university research has added nearly $2 trillion to U.S. industrial output, supported 6.5 million jobs, and launched more than 19,000 startups. Those companies pay…
