MANILA, Philippines – Clergy members said the impeachment complaint they filed against Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, February 9, is an issue of “moral concern.”
“We pray that Congress impeach forthwith Vice President Sara Duterte,” Reverend Father Joselito Sarabia told reporters. “This is the time for her to present her evidence…this is an occasion for her to answer the accusations.”
The third complaint accuses Vice President Sara Duterte of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, and commission of high crimes in relation to her alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds, her supposed bribery of education officials, her assassination threat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family, and her alleged unexplained wealth, among others.
The complainants are represented by Amando Virgil Ligutan, the lawyer who also represented the third set of petitioners in the Duterte impeachment case 2024. Most of the offenses cited are similar to the complaint filed last year, although they now also include the testimony of Ramil Madriaga, Duterte’s former aide and alleged bagman.
The complainant’s backer in the House is ML Representative Leila de Lima, who insisted there’s nothing barring her from endorsing a second petition. She already endorsed the impeachment complaint filed by another set of religious leaders as well as civil society advocates against Duterte last week.
