Pepe (PEPE) is a meme cryptocurrency launched on April 17, 2023, designed primarily for entertainment purposes. It operates as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, though it has since been bridged to BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) and Arbitrum (ArbERC-20). The project emphasizes a community-driven, "stealth launch" approach with no presale and a zero-tax policy.

Issuance and Supply Mechanism

The token was launched with a fixed maximum supply of 420,690,000,000,000 (420.69 trillion) tokens. The issuance mechanism was designed to be deflationary through manual burning processes rather than programmatic inflation.

• Stealth Launch: The project held no public or private sales, ICOs, or airdrops to raise funds.
• Deflationary Nature: The token contract includes a "burn" function. While there are no programmatic or algorithmic buyback-and-burn mechanisms, the project team has performed manual burns, and the liquidity provision (LP) tokens from the initial launch were burnt to ensure the contract ownership was renounced.
• Tax Policy: PEPE features a zero-tax policy, meaning no transaction fees are redistributed to the team or a treasury during buys or sells.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial allocation of the 420.69 trillion PEPE tokens was divided into two primary categories to facilitate immediate liquidity and future growth:

As of late 2024, the vast majority of the supply (~99.97%) remains on the Ethereum network. There is a notable concentration of supply among top holders, with the top 10 addresses on Ethereum controlling approximately 41.06% of the supply, many of which are exchange hot wallets (e.g., Binance, OKX, and Crypto.com).

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

PEPE is explicitly positioned by its creators as a "completely useless" token intended for entertainment. It does not confer voting rights, claims on capital, or profit-sharing.

• Primary Use: Its main utility is as a speculative digital collectible and a medium of exchange within the meme coin ecosystem.
• Historical Utility: Previously, holding at least one PEPE token granted access to the "Pepe Palace" Discord server, but this functionality was discontinued by December 2024.
• Incentives: The project relies on a "redistribution system" (as described in some community contexts) and the psychological incentive of "HODLing" to benefit from potential scarcity created by burns. However, there are no formal staking rewards or yield-bearing mechanisms provided by the official protocol.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

The PEPE project does not follow a traditional venture-backed vesting schedule with periodic unlocks. Instead, the supply was largely released at launch.

• Locking: The initial liquidity provision tokens were burnt, effectively locking that liquidity permanently. The remaining 6.9% of the supply was placed in a multi-sig wallet.
• Unlocking Time: According to on-chain data, the primary "unlock" event occurred at the token's inception on April 17, 2023, when the total supply was generated.
• Contract Renouncement: The token contract has been renounced, meaning no individual or entity can alter the contract, mint new tokens, or modify the existing logic.

Security and Governance

There is no active governance process for PEPE. Tokenholders do not vote on protocol changes or treasury management. The project development is conducted by the core team, although the renounced contract limits their ability to change the token's fundamental properties.

Notably, the contract contains a "blacklist" function that allows the owner to prohibit specific addresses from interacting with the contract. This function was used once shortly after launch to blacklist an address that purchased a significant portion of the supply immediately upon deployment. Because the contract is now renounced, this blacklist cannot be modified.
